Artist Statement

Born on the hottest day in the Summer of 1993...

I was meant to conquer the world. Similar to Daenarys Stormborn, the unbearable weather is one of the defining elements of a natural born leader. I sometimes ask my mom if she remembers anything else about that day besides the dreadful weather and incomparable pain that she experienced; maybe the smell in the air on the way to the hospital or perhaps a song that played in the background? But... her response usually lacks the creative details. Perhaps the reason behind my thirst for the arts is my longing for a back story that mirrors Game of Thrones...who knows? 

 When I was younger, I longed for a creative talent. Although I was a soprano in my choir, my singing voice is far from exceptional. Drawing has always been a failed attempt. I was never the best dancer and I was much too shy to try my hand at theater. But when I close my eyes, I see beautiful things. My creative mind makes up for the talents that I may lack. I'm perceptive. I have high emotional intelligence. I enjoy observing the nuances of human communication.

 Protecting the ownership of ideas is something that's always interested me. What happens when someone thinks of something great but doesn't know how to bring it into fruition? What happens when you tell a friend about this idea and they steal it as their own? What happens then? Who cares? I do. Intellectual Property Law is an extremely important sector of law that I hope to one day practice. I find that I work best when I'm passionate about what it is that I'm working on. Seeing and most importantly learning about media helps me to feel a special connection to art... the connection I longed for when I was a child that desired to one day be a star. I have a passion for helping others. I no longer want to be center stage (despite what my zodiac sign may say about me), but I want to support someone that I believe in and provide them with the tools they need to get there.

Favorite Movie
Love & Basketball
This movie may seem like a cliche among the African-American community but I don't care. Love inspires me. I love LOVE... especially black love. I especially enjoy films that display the diverse experiences of black people.
  

Favorite Shows
Scandal

My love for Scandal goes back to my enjoyment of the nuances of human communication. I also love seeing women in positions of power. Olivia Pope is forced to be everyone's rock - she is supposed to have control over any and everything. It is interesting to watch her layers peel away on Thursday nights.

Game of Thrones

As for GoT, I spent years being a proud member of the 1% of the population of people who did not watch Game of Thrones... that was until this summer. You're probably thinking, "What took you so long?" Well, it wasn't until this summer that I learned that one of the characters was a "girl boss, who owned dragons." Now as funny as that may sound, it was enough of a reason for me to finally give the show a chance. It wasn't long before I identified this "girl boss" and saw a piece of myself reflected in the show. I binge watched every season and now Game of Thrones, is one of my favorites. 

I'm attracted to media that I can identify with. Therefore, it's only natural for my work to reflect things that I can intimately identify with.

I want my work to reflect the story of someone who is passionate, hard working, unapologetic and powerful.

Blog #4: MOMI Visit

At the Museum of the Moving Image, I was able to visit the Jim Henson Gallery and learn about the use and history of puppetry in media. I played with the puppet demo and found that it was much harder than I could have imagined to control the puppet and move it on beat with the music and words. In addition to exploring the Jim Henson Gallery, I participated in the stop animation demonstration. It was pretty cool to do but difficult to do smoothly and I could tell that it would take quite a bit of time to perfect the timing of the animation. It's hard to believe that there was a time where stop animation was the standard. One of my favorite takeaways from the visit was seeing the head sculptures from Starman and learning that each sculpture only occupied a single frame of film to get a "fluid, five-second transformation" in the movie. Blog #3: Relationships Between Shots

I chose a scene from one of my favorite movies: Love & Basketball. The cuts in this scene are continuity editing. The scene begins with an action shot where Quincy scores a shot in his high school basketball game. After the shot, there is a graphic match shot of the crowd cheering for Quincy, then an eyeline match of Monica where we see her character reacting to the shot. From there, it cuts back to Quincy and the basketball game. The scene then cuts to Shawnee and Monica talking to one another using the 180 rule and a jump cut to Shawnee's friend as she chuckles from overhearing Shawnee's comment then there is another cut back to Shawnee and Monica talking. The scene cuts back to Quincy playing basketball and then again back to Shawnee and Monica's conversation where we see also see another eyeline match to show that Monica is concentrating on the game. Blog #2: Soundwalk

I decided to take my soundwalk around Hunter College. It was noisy to say the least. I heard honking cars, people chattering, trucks with heavy engines and the hustle and bustle of people trying navigate towards their destinations despite moving food carts and construction workers. The texture of the sound was rich with different elements competing for my ears' attention. Cars were the main instruments of the city symphony with horns, exhaust, engines roaring, and tires screeching making up the sounds played by the cars. Manhattan is known for being a busy borough and a horror to drive in which is why it makes sense that car noises are clues to being in Manhatttan. When I decided to walk away from Lexington and towards Park Avenue, it became quieter. By the time, I got to Central Park I was able to hear the distinct differences from 68th and Lexington.
